Airplane pillow with Island Batik

The August Island Batik challenge was left up to the Ambassadors. We could make anything, any size and use the fabric of our choice. In the shipment I received last month was this beautiful collection called Ornate Gems, designed by Kathy Engle. And although my project does not include every fabric in this stack, it doesn’t mean I like those left out less, pink is not suitable for most boys.

Some of the products featured on this site were provided to me free of charge by Island Batik, Hobbs Batting, Aurifil , AccuQuilt, Deb Tucker Studio 180 Designs and Schmetz Needles.

This pack includes 42 ten inch squares of 20 different fabrics. Island Batik also sent a light and dark coordination fabric, the light is the only one I used.

Just a couple shops who have Ornate Gems pre-cuts:

Building the blocks

AccuQuilt has this really cute airplane/biplane die as well as the embroidery file (free with purchase) to secure each piece. It will easily fit on a 6″ block with a nice border.

All of my blocks were quilted and appliqued on the new to me BabyLock Alliance. I added just a touch of embellishing, on this plane, the year 2023.

This one, Wesley of course.

Wesley was born in 2021 so I added that to one wing and his initials on the other.

What I was going to make was a toss up, quilt or pillow. The pillow won.

I am so sorry about the lack of brightness in my photos. It has been raining and my current sewing room lacks sufficient lighting.

Note to self: leave a larger opening for stuffing. My hand barely fit in the hole to stuff.

I LOVE these greens, well, all of the colors in this collection.

Industry partners Schmetz Needles, Hobbs Batting and AccuQuilt are very generous sponsors of the Island Batik Ambassador program. Their products used in this project were not supplied by them, but instead purchased because I believe in each one.

Needles: Schmetz Embroidery Needles 130/705 HE 90/14. Yep, they have a needle for that.

Pillow filling: Hobbs Poly-Down Fiberfill (Best Quality)

AccuQuilt: Airplanes

Another package received

island batik

Island Batik sent another package of fabric in addition to the shipment from this post. Black, white and dark gray solid, 3 packs of stash builders and a 2.5″ strip pack of Celtic Fields designed by Kathy Engle. I have to work on a design for Celtic Fields, cant wait to use it!

See what other IBA’s are up to

  1. Hi Denise, your pillow is awesome. I’m sure that it will be well used! How did you quilt it? Just curious. Hope all is well. Take care.

    1. Thank you. The quilting was done in the hoop, using a Kreative Kiwi design, then the airplanes appliqued in the hoop.
