Free dog house applique
Today I am sharing an applique dog house block, FREE. Long story short, the block did not meet the requirement for the project. So I decided I would share the pattern with you all. The sample block was pieced using Island Batik stash builders and Acorn-Basics yardage (for the outside of the doghouse). The background fabric measures 12″ x 18″ and is Island Batik gray. The gray solid, it is absolutely my favorite fabric. I LOVE IT. So much so that I have already purchased yardage from Missouri Star Quilt Co (no affiliation).
Templates are reversed and suitable for needle turn or fusible applique. You can also print the templates on freezer paper which is what I did. After I turned the seams under and removed the freezer paper I layered the applique pieces using a small dot of Elmers washable school glue to hold everything down.
Although you cannot see the fluffy soft bed in the photo, the bed has an additional 2 layers of cotton batting batting. It adds a nice visual. Then I ran a straight stitch around everything to secure it to the background.
The pattern will be available on my pattern page in a couple of days. Until then, click on the download button found at the bottom of this post. The templates will open in a new window. Paw print not included in the pattern.
The house looks a little wonky in the photo but I think its just because of the angle I am standing to take the photo.
If you do try the pattern remember these things:
Lay your background fabric on your cutting mat and make sure it is square with the mat.
Then place the applique on the background. It may look straight but don’t eye it. The applique is deceiving.
Use a straight edge or a ruler and turn the applique so the left and right walls are parallel to the background. This will angle the bottom of the applique which is the correct placement.
Do you like paper piecing or considering giving it a try? Check back next month for another free download. For the March download you will need basic paper piecing knowledge. You can find my pp pictorial here or visit Youtube where you can spend hours watching in depth instructions on paper piecing.

Seashore Splendor
I’ve also joined in a quilt a long with Pamela @ https://www.pamelaquilts.com/ . Seashore Splendor will be a 60″ x 72″ quilt, so a nice size to lounge around on a cool night. She just released block 1, Lady of the lake.
Ever other week she will release a new block until the end of the year. If you miss a block or two or are a late comer, the blocks will still be available for download. So hop over to her site for more information.
My block to the left. I am using a mix of 8 different blues that I have left from my Tulip Mosaic quilt. Dark blue is really a hard shade to photograph but it sure does bring out the light blue which usually washes out in photos.
