Table runner and placemats
The Island Batik January Challenge was to make placemats and since there are only 2 of us now I also made a runner. The Forget Me Not fabric collection is so pleasing to my eye I have been saving it for something special since last year.
The strips sets include 40 strips with 20 fabrics. I’m always concerned about making a quilt with fabric that is no longer widely available so I decided to use this collection on my placemats.
The Hobbs Fusible Strips are 2 1/4″ wide and 25 yards which was enough for the 20 strips in the runner. Wonder if the fusible strips make a difference? For the placemats I cut strips from Hobbs Batting Scraps, non fusible. While the non fusible worked (using clips to hold my rope) the fusible definitely held my folds together.
First I joined 20 strips for the runner.
After all strips were joined I trimmed the seam down to 1/4″.
I had read that you should use denim needles when making fabric rugs but I used a Schmetz Chrome Microtex needle and had no issues.
I’ve wanted to make a fabric rug for a long time and I am happy I finally decided to jump in with both feet.

I love these! I’ve been wanting to make a jelly roll rug and haven’t yet. Doing smaller ones hadn’t occurred to me but I love yours!
Thanks Emily, I wish I had tried sooner. The first couple rounds are a pain because of the sharp turn. You’ll have fun making one.
