One die wonder challenge with AccuQuilt
The year is flying along and spring has finally arrived. There are still days and nights outside that feel like Mother Nature forgot to pay to electric bill or that it’s spring.
The guidelines of this months Island Batik challenge were to make a 45″ x 60″ or larger quilt using the AccuQuilt BOB (block on board) die we received in our January box. The BOB die I received is the 10″ Chimney Sweep.
If you aren’t familiar with the BOB die’s let me give you a quick description.
Each BOB die includes all shapes to cut 1 block with a single pass through the cutter. The dog ears have been removed so as long as you can sew an accurate 1/4″ seam there is no squaring up or trimming of dog ears.
The Chimney Sweep die creates one 2 color 10″ finished block with a single pass or you can of course make a multi colored block which is what I have done. The fabric I chose to use is the Quiet Shades Collection.
You likely remember the photo above from last month. AccuQuilt sent me their newly released GO! Nautical Medley die to create a project and write a post for their blog. You can see that post here.
The colors in this collection are so soft and perfect for a spring time project.
Fabrics placed on the die for a scrappy look. The hst and triangle shapes were all cut using Island Batik solid white for each block. I forgot to mention, AccuQuilt provides pre-cutting dims on the die packaging as well as on their website. So If you misplace the packaging you only need to find the die on their site, scroll down to “Details” and expand. They also provide a video for most of their dies.
The patches are easy to assemble. For this BOB die AQ recommends pressing seams open which I have done.
Join the patches in rows as shown above, then join the rows.
I added a 2″ sashing between the blocks with bright cornerstones before calling it a night. It took 7 hours (stopping to cook dinner) to reach this point, that included all the cutting. I’ll be sharing the finish soon along with another small project using this die.
Lovely quilt in such pretty pastel shades! Thanks for sharing on Wednesday Wait Loss.
Thanks Jennifer, my favorite is the 2 color I just finished quilting.
Hi Denise, that is pretty amazing. So much less work cutting fabrics…and they’re accurate. Awesome! You quilt is really lovely. I like the scrappy look of it.
Thank you Andree
That’s another pretty quilt from a great die…can you see me turning green with envy!
Lol, you should come back today as you would blend well with the blocks I am sharing.
Love how you played with different value placements to vary the blocks.
I wanted to see how many different designs you could do with the blocks. My favorite is still a 2 color Chimney Sweep.
It’s amazing how much difference colors make on this block. Your soft colors look great.
I’m so sad that I have used all the quiet shades collection, I really love it.
Pretty! I like how you played with different placements of the pieces as light/dark/same–gives the blocks totally different looks!
Thanks for noticing, that is what I was trying to do. There’s a couple I like better than others. I started cutting 2 color blocks last night.
The Chimney Sweep block quilt is very pretty, calming colors and the lavender is just the right pop of color. I have been eyeing a BOB at Accuquilt, the Morning Star block, the ease of cutting a blocks worth of pieces is worth the cost of the die IMO.
I haven’t seen the Morning Star BOB. The saved time and wasted fabric from mis-cutting is definitely worth the cost. I couldn’t believe how quick I was able to construct the Storm At Sea with the BOB die.
I like how that is turning out – glad you are liking your die cutter
Thank you. I started cutting out 2 color blocks last night and hope to share them next Thursday. I love the die cutter.
Anytime you can minimize cutting time is a good thing! I’ve always wanted an Accuquilt. Maybe one day!
Right and then there’s the waste by not cutting right.
