Put your foot down #58

What’s under my foot?

Welcome to Put your foot down. I’ve had a busy week sewing on a new quilt and playing with the design so it would make more sense for a quilt a long. The version I am making will finish at 85″ square, over 100 blocks with a flying geese border. logcabinquiltblocks

It’s a log cabin quilt and the templates have 17 different color combos, all are repeating blocks. Last week when I asked for input here on my blog and on social media the responses were varied. Some said 20 blocks in a month was just too many, other said no not at all.

Final design for the Quilt Along

After reading everyone’s thoughts I went back to the design to see what I could do to make a smaller version for a year long qal. One in which you would not be faced with 20 blocks in one month, 16 another, 2 months with 12…you get the picture.

In the end, I removed the outside border, the flying geese border,  vertical  and horizontal rows bringing the design down to 63″ square and a total of 7 blocks a month. And here is what I ended up with, 2 versions.

When?

First let me say the QAL will be free. Free downloads will only be available until Sept 2021.

Fabric requirements can be found here or , you will find all downloads as they are released and QAL info on the Tree of life Qal page, see top bar.   The first download will be available August 1st as well as a post here on my blog. Yea I know, 7 blocks seems like a lot but they are paper pieced and  go together rather quickly. Best of all, unless you just like to cut fabric you will only need to cut strips.

Strip size will be included in each download along with the template. I haven’t decided if I will do a video for each block or a pictorial on “how to paper piece with strips.” If you’d like to get an idea of what that is you can view my videos here.

If you’re joining in or just want to spread the love, copy and paste the code below. Tip: You could also use the background blocks to write names to make this a Family Tree quilt.

  1. Count me in since it’s not in July! I love the design and can see it in my minds eye with a pretty flying geese border. Since it isn’t this month, it’s not a squirrel, right?

    1. Exactly and I’d be happy to send you templates for flying geese. Or perhaps just add them as an optional download.

  2. Thanks for sharing my quilt! The green ring is all done now, though I am still working on the center medallion.

    1. You’re welcome. I’m really enjoying watching it come together and imagining the colors you’ll choosing next.

  3. This one is beautiful. I have to think about it for some days, but I’m really tempted to jump in. 7 blocks a month will be great for me. I just have to come home and look through my stash.

    1. I would love it if you joined. The blocks go together so quick. Saturday I was able to sew together 30 something blocks, log cabins and the pinwheels in about 9 hours. That included stopping to cook, eat, clean up the messes, take Enzo outside every time he thought the wild life was coming into the yard, ect.

  4. Whew! I feel delighted and relieved. The finished quilt is adorable, as I knew it would be. I am relived that you have cut it down in size and in # of blocks per month. one of my first quilts was log cabin – I have hated those blocks since and never do them. It’s redemption time. Paper piecing with strips, yes, I can do this and I’ve got a month to pull it together.

    1. You got pretty acquainted with piecing with strips on the Mosiac so yes, you got this. So much easier too. I’m so excited you are joining me.
