Put your foot down #62

What’s under my foot?

See disclosure

The expanded Log Cabin Tree of Life is a flimsy and the papers have been removed, now I need to work up a quilting plan. All of the fabrics are Island Batik left over from challenges except for the background fabrics which I purchased but still IB.  They are solid white and Rice. Rice is blue although it does look gray in almost every photo I have taken. I threw a couple pinwheel blocks in the background and I think they add interest.

Eventually I will release a pattern for this version, the pattern is ready and has been tested but I think I want to add the directions for the smaller quilt we are making in the qal too.

New quilt

Sunday I pulled my IB scrap basket looking for something to pair with the new fq bundles from MSQ.  Floralicious was designed by Kathy Engle and I love it so much I purchased 4 fq bundles. Anyway I got sidetracked and decided to clean up the scraps before moving forward.  Everything I could cut with the AccuQuilt 2″ finished square die was cut.  What I couldn’t I set aside. If you are a scrappy quilter and can make use of small bits of fabric leave a comment. Some are 1″ wide strips, all just various sizes.

The squares above, I know they are Island Batik but I am sorry I don’t remember what collection they were from because I used it as a backing. When I cut a quilt from the frame I always save the trimmings and that’s what these were. Update, multi dot fabric is from the Colorpop Collection.

In the photo below that whitish looking fabric is  Rice, the same fabric I used in the Tree of Life. Wow different lighting different appearance.

Needless to say I found the fabric I wanted to pair with the fq bundle except I decided to use just the orange and the blue plumes fabric. The dark blue was left over from the QOV or a Christmas quilt from my first year as an IBA. The dark blue is really lovely and I wish I had more of it.

This is going to be a butterfly quilt that I’ll call Flutter, I haven’t decided if I’ll write a pattern for this yet. It really depends on how well it’s received on social media.  Enough about me, let’s see what I pulled from the last linky party.

One more thing before we move on. Most of the Island Batik fabric I purchase is through MaryMack, fellow IBA. She has an Etsy Shop and if she does not have the fabric listed you are looking for, ask for it because if it’s available she can get it.  She also ships very fast.

Your shares from #61

Anne-Marie of Stories From the Sewing Room is making progress on her For the love of geese quilt and a lot of headway on her fabric storage. She has a great storage space for her fabric.

Andrée from Quilting & Learning, she is so inspiring with everything she does. One of these days I will follow along with her post on fabric dying.

Gretchen’s Little Corner shared her Modern Amish finish.  The splash of color really grabbed my attention on this dreary day.

  1. I am hoping to get busy with your Tree of Life QAL as soon as DH is stable in his recovery from surgery. In the meantime I am doing a pattern test to keep me sane and have been playing with my scraps as well. I can’t wait to see what you are creating with all those lovely bits on your cutting mat! ? Carol

    1. Thank you. The papers weren’t too bad on this one since it was all rectangles and squares. Points are the worst as in stars. Thank you for stopping by.

    1. Thank you Roseanne. Sorry it took so long to reply, my internet has been mostly down since Friday night about 5pm, grrr. Flutter is a flimsy, you’ll have to stop by today for a viewing.

  2. I love your tree of life quilt! The detail is wonderful, the pieced background squares add such interest. Thanks for featuring Modern Amish this week. Happy stitching!

  3. Scraps can easily over-run your studio. Some days I save every tiny piece, others I am more realistic and save only larger strips and chunks. Your Tree of Life quilt looks lovely. It should be a fun QAL.

    1. They did several years ago and I quit saving them except for my muslin. When I became an IBA I started saving them again because the AccuQuilt made it so easy to maintain.

  4. Hi Denise. Your Log Cabin Tree of Life is amazing! I think that the pinwheels do add a nice touch. I also like the texture of the small blocks that are in the rice fabric. Very lovely. I wish I could say that I would make one but at this point I’m going to keep playing without patterns. Who knows, maybe one day – I do like paper piecing…but they are usually small 2 or 3 inch blocks (and only one!)
Thanks so much for featuring my Ciboulette Stitches. It will be your turn to come and see my first star block – I think of you every time I work on it! ps. I would love some small scraps and would happily pay the shipping. Thanks

  5. I think that multi colored print might be from Colorpop? I got a fat quarter pack of Colorpop in the most recent ambassador box and used it for my August challenge (not posted yet, but coming soon) and that’s what it looks like.

  6. Funny you should mention scraps… Next week on my blog, I am talking about scraps, scrap management, and sharing ideas for what to do with scraps. 😀

    1. Scraps have always been a struggle for me. Years ago I saved every piece because I could use even the smallest in applique. Then they took over and I had a huge tote, 4″ long, 2.5″ wide by about 3″ tall full, packed. It really got out of hand I ended up going through it and trashing most of it. Since I have not saved scraps until IB. When our side by side refrigerator went out I saved the baskets from the freezer. One is for IB scraps, one is for my muslin scraps and the 3rd is everything else. The idea is to do something with them when the basket gets full, which is what I did last weekend. No I have to find something to put these 2.5″ squares in. I look forward to your post, I could use ideas.
